| | | This article examines two main approaches to achieving competitive advantage and sustainable performance in healthcare organizations: the resource-based view (RBV) and core capability analysis. RBV allows healthcare organizations to gain competitive advantage through the strategic use of their internal resources; it is based on the efficient use of valuable, rare, difficult to imitate and non-reproducible resources that organizations have. Core capability analysis emphasizes identifying and continually developing the unique capabilities that healthcare organizations possess that provide competitive advantage. These two approaches provide important strategic guidance for managing the resources of healthcare organizations.
