| | | The article focuses on the pre-revolutionary history of Russian non-ferrous metallurgy. In spite of the rich deposits of non-ferrous metals, the industry could not satisfy the growing needs of the country — thus, even though the consumption of copper was rising, its production was lagging behind the general growth of large-scale industry for several decades. It was only in 1906 that copper production started growing rapidly. Demand for zinc and especially lead was satisfied primarily though import.
