Improving the quality of life as a result of developing of the responsible consumption culture (Russia, St. Petersburg)
The article aims at a comprehensive treatment of the relation between the categories of the “level of life” and the “quality of life,” with regards to their role as indices of socio-economic development on the basis of comparison between two consumption models, i.e., the model of consumer sovereignty and the model of responsible consumption. The authors emphasize the basic complexities in developing of the universal and adequate system in evaluation of the quality of life based on the subjective perception of this notion, as well as the intrinsic impossibility of formulating the invariant evaluations of the quality of life in the temporal, international, interregional, inter-class (i.e., among various social groups) and intercultural dimensions. The article provides a short review of the basic approaches to the notion of the “quality of life” and emphasize the special role paid to the category of “health” in its evaluation. The article dwells on the hypothesis, according to which the global recognition of the sustainable development imperative makes the movement towards the increase of the quality of life correspond with the sustainable development goals (SDGs). The authors suggest viewing SDG12, “Responsible consumption and production,” as the locus of these goals; within this approach the transformation of the consumption model necessary for the improvement of the quality of life should provide for the transition from the model of consumer sovereignty to the model of responsible consumption. The research presents the model of expected transformation of the quality of life, as well as the initial reaction of the taxonomy of the tools used in the management of the quality of life.
Key words: quality of life, sustainability metrics, consumption model, responsible consumption, consumer sovereignty, level of life
