| The article presents a perspective upon the nature of the USSR and the reasons for its collapse, including the role of social, economic, institutional, political and ideological factors that led to the destruction of the socio-economic and political systems in the USSR. The author gives a qualitative evaluation of the socio-economic problems existing in the country in the second half of 1980s. The article argues that the possibility to maintain the USSR existed until a metamorphosis of the power elites took place, which in itself was a result of their readiness to exchange power for property. | Key words: CIS, collapse of the USSR, Belovezh Accords, security, competitiveness, sovereign state, state independence, federative state, economic model, social contract, power elites | Pages: 19 - 21 |
